Act 4, Scene 1 Summary

Location: A dark cave
Characters: 1 Witch, 2 Witch, 3 Witch, Hecate, Macbeth, 1 Apparation, 2 Apparation, 3 Apparartion, Lenox
Events: The Witches prepare a magic potion for their meeting with Macbeth and Hecate enters to congratulate the Witches on their trouble. Macbeth arrives to ask the Witches of what is to come and they make three appartions appear. The first apparation (an armed head) tells Macbeth to beware of Macduff, the Thane of Fire. The second apparation (a bloody child) tells him to be bold and that no man shall cause him harm. The third apparation (a crowned child, with a tree in his hand) tells him to be courageous and to take no care about anyone who plots against him. Macbeth vows to kill Macduff. He is also insistent to know whether Banquo’s descendants will ever be king. The Witches then show him a series of 8 kings with Banquo. The Witches disappear and Lenox arrives, reporting that Macduff has fled to England. Macbeth decides he will attack Macduff’s castle and kill his entire family.
